Raeao community hydro electric project
A micro hydroelectricity power system and electrical mini-grid distribution system for a large and remote community in Malaita Island, enabling the beginnings of economic and social sustainability in the area.
It is located in Raeao village, Malaita, and is nearing completion.
This project was funded under the International Greenhouse Partnerships (IGP),a renewable energy program for rural communities in the Solomon Islands that addresses global climate change and greenhouse gas concerns while enabling sustainable community development.Two villages are being electrified with micro hydroelectricity. Their experience will allow monitoring rules to be registered under the Kyoto Protocol to enable Carbon Credit mechanisms to be internationally agreed.
