Reaeo community hydro electric project - Project details
Turbo machinery: Stainless steel Pelena Pelton turbine, with belt drive to 240 Volt / 50Hz AC synchronous alternator, designed for 25 kW of single phase electrical output. Pelena deflection power cut-off, operated by an electromagnetic "failsafe" over-speed and under-speed control circuit.
Generation: Continuous electrical output since commissioning, typically 14 kW. Unlike earlier village system, power delivery has not yet been limited by river limitations, but instead has been set to simply cover the initially small consumer demand. There have been no downtime days recorded to date (in its first year of operation) apart from testing times. Energy meters have been installed to monitor long-term trends.
Weir: Reinforced and buttressed concrete, with inbuilt trashrack and settling basin.
Penstock: uPVC rubber ring joint construction, buried over the full length.
Transmission: 700 metres, overhead "Raison" 3/4/2.5 mm ACSR/GZ Aluminium cable with steel tension strands, to 11,000 Volts, with 8 metre local hardwood timber posts at 50 metre intervals. Cross-arms by Hayman Industries. Tyree transformers type 25M1A rated to 25 kVA, with
Distribution: Underground double-insulated 240 Volt AC with safety protection from RCD breakers. Fittings and cables from JR Turk, Erina. Five separate electrical circuits protected by RCD's and circuit breakers; a residential 'River' circuit, residential 'Beach' circuit, mixed 'School' circuit, a mixed 'Church' circuit and a mixed 'SDA' circuit that includes a Health Clinic.
Commissioned: In December 2002. Trial period scheduled to finish in April 2003, followed by a 'hand-over' ceremony.
Training provided: A series of training workshops, including
- Two participants in Manawai women's energy workshop (1997)
- Women's energy awareness workshop (one week in August 2004)
- Marapeina Harbour technician's training course (August 2004)
- on-the-job experiential training, April 2002 and December 2002.
- participation in one-week Staff Training Seminar, Honiara September 2002.
Operation & Maintenance : Refer to Raeao hydro manual.
Tariffing: Village tariff determined by Community Hydro Committee, as a monthly flat rate dependent upon fittings and outlets. Funds held and invested in community bank account.
