Raeao - Project scope
Project has directly connected houses, kitchens, SSEC church and SDA church, Women's Centre, large Primary School of five buildings, staff room, store room and library (in need of stores and books!), and a Provincial Health Clinic recently built with AusAID assistance.
Direct potential beneficiaries: Raeao village residents, numbering approximately 500, including an outlying SDA settlement. The region also benefits by the better health and education facilities. Economic benefits have certainly flowed from the savings on kerosene and batteries, to the extent of supporting a growing hydro community fund and providing support for two operator/technicians. However, it is too early to see other economic developments. The women's club in Raeao hopes to develop a clothing industry, using second hand materials to sew marketable clothing for the local market. The men have a plan to process copra to marketable coconut oil.
