HOW THE PLANTING MATERIAL NETWORK STARTED...

The Planting Material Network (PMN) was set up in 1996 as part of the Kastom Garden Project (KGP). It was supported by Australian development assistance agency, APACE - Appropriate Technology for Community and Environment - and funded by AusAID.

A mini-farm was set up on organic farmer, Joini Tutua's land at Burns Creek in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands. This is where the KGP is based.

The Network became an independent NGO in 2000.

The coup and conflict of that year hastened the decentralisation of the Network. Provincial seed centres were established to provide added security to the Network and its planting material.

The Planting Material Network is supported by Kastom Gaden Association.
