Manawai Community Hydro-electric project
A micro hydroelectricity power system and electrical mini-grid distribution system for a large and remote community in Malaita Island, enabling the beginnings of economic and social sustainability in the area.
For community development and the installation of a hydro electricity project, APACE has teamed up with the Manawai Harbour village community, the Rokahara Farmers Association (as local institutional partner) and a German group EZE (as donor).
The project was officially opened by the Prime Minister of Solomon Islands in December 1998.
Manawai community are currently developing a rice-processing industry as their first large scale economic application of the renewable energy.
